Timber Framing

The techniques used in timber framing date back thousands of years, and have been used in many parts of the world such as, ancient Japan, Europe and medieval England. At TimberFab we continue this long tradition in all our timber projects while working with builders to integrate traditional joinery into contemporary building systems.

Traditional 'bents and bays' framing or a simplified wall and truss system can be used to to deliver a full timber framed structure. Each approach is described in more detail below.

Custom Timber Framing

As a custom timber frame shop we do not necessarily have a set style of work. We have crafted a variety of projects such as:

  • Modern Smooth Planed Designs
  • Hand Planed Reproduction Homes
  • Rustic Hand Hewn Barns
  • Ornate Chinese Structures
  • Entry Canopies and Breezeways

Many clients have said that TimberFab was able to take their ideas and “find a way to build them” when other shops have tried to talk them into alternate designs to fit with their shop standards. We pride ourselves on making your ideas come to fruition.

Wall & Truss Systems

Simple frames for great rooms, room additions, small buildings, or simple house designs can be built combining TimberFab Trusses and TimberFab wall systems. This system often utilizes the “English Tie Joint” connection found in early medieval European timber frame construction. The walls are assembled and raised, then the trusses (which may be shipped assembled) are set and attached to joinery in the wall system. The completed frame can then be enclosed with foam core panels or conventional framing. Often these frames form the core of the structure and the remainder is conventionally built around the great room formed by the timber frame.

Most of our projects start with a sketch or a picture from a magazine. If you are using an architect, it is best that we are involved in the early planning stage. Send your ideas to us for a free preliminary proposal. It is helpful to give us as much information as possible so we can visualize your project the way you see it.
